Jordan Henderson is expected to miss the next six to eight weeks after the Liverpool captain underwent surgery for an adductor injury.
Henderson was stopped with a groin problem during Saturday’s derby loss to Everton and scans revealed an operation would be necessary. He will be absent for at least five Liverpool games and England’s triple World Cup qualifier at the end of March.
The news is the latest setback to befall Jürgen Klopp in a campaign plagued with injuries and problems, and it comes with Liverpool facing a fight to qualify for the Champions League next season.
A club statement read: “Henderson has had a successful corrective procedure performed on the adductor injury. You will begin a rehabilitation program immediately. There is no specific time scale on your return; however, the 30-year-old is initially ruled out until after the international break in March.
“Henderson’s recovery will be closely monitored by the club’s medical department and his progression during his rehabilitation work will determine when he can resume full training.”
The midfielder has been a substitute in central defense recently as a result of injuries to Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Joël Matip and Fabinho. Only Fabinho is expected to return this season and Klopp’s central defense options for Sunday’s visit to Sheffield United include new signings Ozan Kabak and Ben Davies, as well as Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams.
Henderson will miss Thursday’s home game against Chelsea, which could have big repercussions for Liverpool’s chances of finishing in the top four, and the second leg of the Champions League round of 16 against RB Leipzig. He could also be absent for the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals, scheduled for April 6-7, if Liverpool advance. They lead Leipzig 2-0.
England play the qualifying rounds for the World Cup at home to San Marino and Poland and as a visitor to Albania.
