Liverpool could lose £ 150m if they did not qualify for the UEFA Champions League, according to football finance expert Kieran Maguire.
The Reds have withdrawn from the Premier League title race after a series of poor results and now face a battle to qualify for Europe’s main competition.
Jurgen Klopp’s team currently resides in fourth place but has a one-point lead over Chelsea in fifth, but the Blues could surpass them on Monday when they face Newcastle United following the Reds’ defeat on Saturday at the lunchtime against Leicester City.
West Ham and Everton were also able to overtake them ahead of next weekend’s Merseyside derby with the Hammers hosting Sheffield United on Monday and the Blues taking on Fulham and Manchester City before their trip to Anfield.
While not winning the Premier League will marginally affect the club’s revenue, losing a result in the top four could cost the club up to £ 150 million.
With Liverpool needing to reinvest in their squad this summer, with Gini Wijnaldum increasingly likely to leave, that would be a huge blow to any future title tilt.
“Your finances will not suffer significantly as a result of not winning the league,” he told Football Insider.
“The important thing for them is qualification for the Champions League, which is worth between 40 and 150 million pounds, depending on how far you go in the competition.

“The difference between finishing first and second is less than £ 2 million in prizes. You may get some sponsor bonuses, but they are actually peanuts.
“From a financial point of view, fifth versus fourth is much more important than first versus second.”
