Here are the Liverpool night headlines for Thursday 17th September.
Reds open talks with Bayern as deal with Thiago draws closer
Liverpool have entered into talks with Bayern Munich for a £ 27m offer for midfielder Thiago .
The Reds have been repeatedly linked with a move to the Spanish international this summer, and it appears the transfer is now closer to completion.
Thiago is entering the final year of his contract with the Bundesliga and the European champions, who are keen to sell rather than lose the 29-year-old for free next year.
ECHO understands that the deal is not yet in an advanced stage, although talks have started and the player is believed to be interested in moving to Merseyside.
The transfer of Thiago is also not expected to depend on the sale of Gini Wijnaldum, who is also in the final year of his contract.
The numbers that Thiago could use for Liverpool
Thiago’s long-awaited arrival will mean another addition to Jurgen Klopp’s team, and there will be a lot of interest surrounding his choice of jersey number.
He is expected to wear jersey number six, worn by Dejan Lovren before his departure in early summer.
But there are other potential options for the Spaniard, some of which could prove a bummer for those soccer fans who like to see players with numbers that relate to their position on the field.
The empty jerseys at Anfield include the number 2, 19 and 20, and we took a look in depth at the history of each one of them .
Neville predicts Thiago signing will give Liverpool new ‘boost’
Garry Neville has suggested that signing Thiago would give Liverpool a “world-class presence” they need to match the accomplishments of the last two seasons.
The Reds are looking to defend their Premier League title this campaign, but a quiet summer has led to predictions of a fall.
But the news that Liverpool are in talks to sign Thiago has changed the outlook for some, including former Manchester United defender turned expert Neville.
“It wouldn’t be ridiculous to suggest that there will be a slight drop, if they don’t somehow stimulate that team by doing something,” Neville told Sky Sports.
“Getting them to do the same without amending the squad to give them that push again, that’s where signing Thiago would give Liverpool a great time, to send a message to the rest of the players that we have signed one of the best players in the world in that position.
“He is world class and would give them a world class presence in an area of the field where they don’t have a world class presence. They need that impetus to stay where they are. “
