Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has been named best male coach at the Best FIFA awards, and Bayern Munich forward Robert Lewandowski was named best male player.
Liverpool were more successful as four of Klopp’s players were named to the men’s team of the year alongside Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne.
Manchester City and England defender Lucy Bronze was named Player of the Year. Bronze won a third consecutive Champions League title with Lyon in August, before returning to City later in the summer.
Meanwhile, Spurs forward Son Heung-Min won the goal of the year award for his impressive solo effort against Burnley last December.
Klopp won the award for the second consecutive season after beating competition from Leeds coach Marcelo Bielsa and Bayern Munich’s Hansi Flick, who were the other finalists for the award.
Liverpool followed up their 2018-2019 Champions League triumph by winning the 2019-20 Premier League as the Reds ended a 30-year wait to win the top flight title.
Klopp gave credit to his technical team and said: “I have these guys to thank. What we did in the last few years was really special.”
On the Premier League title, the German added: “I had no idea how it would feel and I felt absolutely overwhelming.”
Polish forward Lewandowksi scored 15 goals in 10 games when Bayern won the Champions League last season, while also contributing 34 league goals when the Bavarian team added the Bundesliga title.
Lewandowski edged out fellow finalists Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi to claim the award, becoming the second player outside the famous duo to win the award, or their previous incarnations, since 2008.
Four Liverpool and KDB players make the best XI
Liverpool’s Alisson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Thiago Alcantara were named in the Men’s XI of the Year, along with the City De Bruyne midfielder.
Brazilian international Alisson lost to Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer in the goalkeeper of the year award, but was chosen ahead of the German in the team of the year.
Alexander-Arnold and Van Dijk were key figures on Liverpool’s title-winning team, while Thiago joined the club this summer after helping Bayern win the Champions League.
The finalists for the male player of the year – Lewandowski, Ronaldo and Messi – made up the three forwards on the team of the year.
Son receives the Puskas award for his solo Wondergoal
Tottenham’s sublime individual goal against Burnley last December has been named the best in the world for the past year.
The South Korean picked up the ball on the edge of his own area during the 5-0 Premier League win before smashing through Burnley’s entire team and overtaking Nick Pope.
Son surpassed the efforts of Luiz Suárez for Barcelona and Giorgian De Arrascaeta of Flamengo to win the Puskas Award at FIFA’s The Best ceremony.
The award, first established in 2009, is named after former Real Madrid striker Ferenc Puskas.
They are following in the footsteps of people like Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, James Rodríguez, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Mohamed Salah to claim the award.
