Liverpool braces for Kostas Tsimikas push as Reds gear up for intense schedule

Liverpool are in line for a defensive boost as new recruit Kostas Tsimikas is set to return to training.

The Greek international suffered a thigh injury last month during a 7-2 win over Lincoln in the Carabao Cup.

He hasn’t appeared in a team of the day since then, after being on the bench for the Community Shield against Arsenal and the Premier League clash at Chelsea earlier in the season.

Tsimikas will miss again this weekend at home to Sheffield United.

Long-term absentee Virgil van Dijk will, of course, also be on the sidelines, but Joel Matip could be back in the frame.

Before the 1-0 win against Ajax, Jurgen Klopp indicated that Matip “could be involved again at the weekend.”

Updates are also expected later this afternoon on Thiago Alcantara and Naby Keita when Klopp gives his pre-match press conference.

But an early training comeback from Tsimikas next week will be good news for the Reds.

Klopp gave a clear indication of the need for rotation and managed playing time during this busy period with his substitutions in Amsterdam.

The manager made use of all five possible changes, including a triple change that eliminated Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino after one hour.

Robertson has played every minute of the five league games so far plus the entire Champions League clash in Ajax.

Tsimikas will be a useful option at Klopp’s disposal, as Liverpool will face two more European qualifiers on weekdays, as well as national commitments each weekend before the international break in November.
