Liverpool 3-1 Arsenal: 5 talking points when Reds come from behind to fire Gunners

[ad_1]

Liverpool maintained their 100 percent record and joined Leicester and rivals Everton as the only teams to have three wins out of three in the Premier League so far.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have taken off against Arsenal twice in recent months, but overcame an early goal from Alexandre Lacazette to lose 3-1 winners at Anfield.

The Frenchman took advantage of an error by Andy Robertson to open the scoring against an empty Kop.

However, Arsenal’s lead lasted just 147 seconds as Sadio Mane took the opportunity to level proceedings and Robertson made up for his earlier mishap by giving the hosts the lead.

And Diogo Jota came off the bench to seal the victory with a dream debut goal at the end.

It was well deserved in a game dominated by the defending Premier League champions who should have won by more than a one goal margin.

Here are five talking points from Liverpool’s impressive performance in Merseyside.

Sparkling reds

In their first two games, Liverpool have been questioned, more against Leeds than Chelsea, but they were one class above Arsenal in Merseyside.

In the first half they were dominant and deserved to get ahead and somehow did not increase their lead in 45 seconds.

Trent Alexander-Arnold was hugely impressive with some excellent deliveries and both Mane and Mo Salah were in their prime.

Liverpool had almost twice the possession of their opponents and had four times as many shots.

Sadio Mane equalized minutes later

All this without star signing Thiago, who was ready to take advantage of his impressive debut cameo before injury intervened.

Well, a lucky boy?

Last week, the Liverpool star scored both goals in a 2-0 win at Chelsea that showed all his best qualities.

Mane personifies Klopp’s side: energetic, aggressive, clinical. Monday night, though the 28-year-old was perhaps a bit too aggressive with Kieran Tierney in the opening minutes.

The forward mishandled the ball and sought to make amends, and also leave a mark, but led with his arm, which bought an irate reaction from the Arsenal players.

He received a yellow card before scoring the tie. It is true that a red would have been hard, but they have given it to him.

Lacazette’s claim for participation

Lacazette spoke of how last season at Arsenal was the toughest yet with injuries and a lack of participation affecting him.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s role as Arsenal’s main man has often meant the Frenchman had to adjust around the 31-year-old.

But Lacazette’s strike at Anfield was the third in the first three games of the season. That is a feat that even Aubameyang has not accomplished. Olivier Giroud was the last man to do it six years ago.

The former Lyon player’s role in a three-man attack with Aubameyang on one side and Willian on the other means we finally got to see the best of him.

Expensive liverpool

Liverpool’s three forwards get the most applause and rightly so, but the cornerstone of their recent success has been their defense.

Diogo Jota came off the bench to score in his debut

This season, however, there are worrying signs with errors occurring much more frequently than we are used to.

In the season opener, Virgil van Dijk reminded us that he is really human with a mistake.

And Arsenal’s first goal was due to a foul by Robertson and Alisson really should have done better with the scraped finish.

The Reds’ devastating attack can often cover up defensive lapses, as was the case again tonight, but in the first three games Liverpool have made two direct errors that have led to goals. Food for thought.

Arteta’s surprise choice

Many of us think that David Luiz might be leaving North London this summer after making too much noise.

But the Brazilian got the nod over his compatriot Gabriel, the man who cost more than £ 20 million in the summer.

It underscores Arteta’s caution when recruiting new recruits, especially in defense.

Gabriel had started Arsenal’s first two games while Luiz was yet to appear, but for the Gunners the most daunting journey of the season so far, the veteran got the nod.

Arteta said: “David [Luiz] he has a lot of experience and has played here many, many times. It gives us something different. ”
