Welsh Health Minister Vaughan Gething warned that Wales’ NHS is “under considerable and sustained pressure” as coronavirus cases and hospital admissions rise.
Wales now has the UK’s highest coronavirus infection rate, with 267.8 cases per 100,000 people in the past week, compared to 149.5 in England, 143.6 in Northern Ireland and 100.3 in Scotland.
Gething said there are now eight local authorities in Wales with rates exceeding 400 cases per 100,000 people, four times more areas than on Friday.
He added that there are now more than 1,800 coronavirus-related patients in hospitals in Wales, the highest number ever recorded.
The latest figures from Wales have shown that another 14 people have died from coronavirus in Wales and more than 1,900 positive cases have been confirmed.
