Live updates as Extinction Rebellion protesters block Cardiff roads and cause delays

Why is the protest happening?

The activists say their protests are to “highlight the catastrophic impact of climate change on weather patterns and rising tides.”

The overwhelming consensus of scientists around the world is that if we do not take urgent action to eliminate dependence on fossil fuels such as coal and oil, we face disaster due to rising temperatures and rising sea levels.

Cardiff is particularly at risk with research suggesting, out of the 85 cities in the world, it ranks sixth among those most affected by global warming.

It is one of only two European cities in the top 10 and much higher than the next UK city, London, which ranks 22.

One of the Cardiff Rebellion coordinators, Macey Gray from Bethesda in North Wales, previously said: “The future starts now. As we emerge from the blockade, the UK government should lead the world with a radical ecological recovery plan. Your current plans are sadly not accomplishing that. They are failing the citizens of the UK.

“The Climate and Ecology Bill, if passed, would give the people of the UK the power to shape a future that looks beyond tribal politics and in the short term to create a future where all life may prosper. “
