Chancellor Rishi Sunak has announced a four-month extension to the leave plan under which the government subsidizes the wages of workers temporarily laid off due to the coronavirus.

Speaking on his 40th birthday, Mr. Sunak told the Commons that the license plan had protected millions of the most vulnerable people.

He said the government was doing everything possible to protect people who were unable to work. He said 7.5 million people had been suspended from 1 million businesses that would otherwise have had to close their stores forever.

The scheme, which pays 80% of a worker’s salary up to a monthly limit of £ 2,500, will remain unchanged until the end of July and will then continue with employers expected to start paying part of the billions of billions of pounds. Staff will continue to be paid 80% of their wages.

Mr. Sunak said that in the coming months, employers could bring workers back part-time while still using the leave scheme. The scheme is costing around £ 8 billion.

Mr. Sunak said: “” Employers currently using the scheme may bring part-time suspended employees.

“And we will ask employers to start sharing with the government the cost of paying people’s wages.”

Mr. Sunak was speaking at the same time that the Welsh Government was holding its daily briefing on the coronavirus outbreak, and Health Minister Vaughan Gething answered questions today. You see live updates on that here.

In response to the announcement, the Trade Union Congress described the decision as “a great relief to millions of working families.”

Sunak warned last week that the licensing plan was not “sustainable” at its current rate, although he promised there would be no “cliff edge” limit.

Your announcement will be followed by a transportation statement and a document on elite sports.
