Remdesivir: five Australian hospitals to receive experimental coronavirus drug

The American pharmaceutical company Gilead is finalizing the location of five hospitals in Australia to receive the much-requested experimental drug remvidiv Covid-19.

The only confirmed location is St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney, a major tertiary hospital and the center of many of New South Wales’s outbreak areas. A NSW Health spokeswoman confirmed that the health department “has engaged with Gilead to obtain access to the medication for Covid-19 patients.”

The news comes when the doctor reporting Covid-19’s response at the White House, immunologist Dr. Anthony Fauci, promoted preliminary findings from a joint study by Gilead and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases that suggested remdesivir could improve the recovery time of patients. His comments have revived global hope for the drug, with no treatments available for the virus.

A Democratic state legislator posted a photograph of men with rifles standing in a gallery yelling at lawmakers below. “Some of my colleagues who have bulletproof vests are wearing them,” said State Senator Dayna Polehanki, a Democrat, wrote on Twitter.

A spokeswoman for the Michigan Senate Minority Leader that at least one legislator was wearing a bulletproof vest.

The images of the protest provoked strong reactions from many Americans. A Black Lives Matter organizer commented on the striking difference between the reaction to unarmed black Americans protesting police violence and armed white Americans protesting public health measures.

I want them to realize that when they called the black protesters “thugs” in Ferguson, we were armed with cardboard signs and cell phones.

If any of us had dared to be on the street, much less a government building, fully armed, this video would not exist.

Because we would all be dead. https://t.co/qNh4WK7FvN
