The number of covid-related patients in hospital this week in Wales surpassed the peak of the first wave in April.
The grim milestone was announced by Health Secretary Vaughan Gething when he addressed the Welsh Government daily briefing on Friday (Nov 6).
He said: “This week the NHS passed the April peak. On Wednesday, there were more covid-related patients in the hospital than at the April peak.
“This includes people with suspected and confirmed coronavirus and people recovering from the virus.
“The numbers have fallen slightly as a result of the discharges and, sadly, some deaths.”
He added that there are currently 1,365 people with covid-related symptoms in Welsh hospitals, which is 169 more than at this time last week.
The update comes forward to the final Wales weekend under a fire lockdown. The lockdown officially ends on Monday (November 9).
After that point, Wales will adhere to a new set of national measures. People will be able to form domestic bubbles again and gather in pubs, bars, cafes and restaurants.
Some of the strict rules that have been in place for the past two weeks will be lifted, but the Welsh government still warns: “We will all have to work hard to keep Wales safe by following some simple guidelines to protect each other, handle the pressure on the NHS and reduce the risk that more firewalls are needed. “
Meanwhile, the licensing scheme will run through March, it was announced.
The plan was scheduled to end on October 31, but the UK government has announced that it will continue due to the planned one-month closure in England.
