Oops: zip code checker crashes
The government’s approach to communications has again come under fire after a postal code checker used to announce new regional lockdown restrictions collapsed moments after its launch.
The flaw in the tool, released on the government website, left many unable to immediately figure out which of the three levels their area had been placed on.
Labor Vice Leader Angela Rayner was among the critics, tweeting: “Zip code checker crashes when government announces which areas are in which Tiers. It sums up all the chaotic handling of the Tiers system from the beginning.”
Commons spokesperson Sir Lindsay Hoyle also admonished the government for posting the information online before it was presented to MPs in the Commons.
Sir Lindsay replied: “This House must be briefed first. We keep telling the Government that that is the way that good governance must treat and respect this House. It is not acceptable to put it online.
“The only good thing about the government is that it has crashed, so it is not useful, so it could be that we receive the statement first.”
Others saw the lighter side, with a Twitter user, Richard Knightwell joking; “Apparently my area is on 504 level gateway timeout, I’m confused, does that mean I can go to the pub or what?”
The government sparked further confusion after a breakdown of the restrictions released alongside Health Secretary Matt Hancock’s written statement contained question marks throughout.
Liberal Democrats health spokesperson Munira Wilson was one of many who pointed out the error, tweeting: “Lots of question marks dot @MattHancock’s written statement today on tiering. Has it been submitted in error? the wrong draft? “
