Lincoln City boss Michael Appleton has revealed the message he received from Jurgen Klopp after Liverpool surprised his team.
A much-changed Reds team was too strong for the League One team in their Carabao Cup third-round clash at LNER Stadium on Thursday.
Liverpool managed a 7-2 victory, although the Imps forced them to fight hard in the second half, which were 5-0 adrift moments after the break.
And Appleton said: “Jurgen came over and said he’s played well and good luck for the rest of the season, which is a nice touch on his part.
“He has done a great job there over the last few years. Today they had a good combination of experience and youth.
“I think we saw a masterclass in spiking from Liverpool in the first half. If we put a bucket in the top corner they would have hit it every time. There were some great endings. You are punished for these kinds of sides.
“They punished us with one or two mistakes. But the reality is that the difference in the first half was the finish.
“I think all the goals, except maybe the fourth, were right in the top corner, which made it very difficult for Alex (Palmer) in goal.
“In the second half there is no doubt that we created opportunities. We were very unlucky to score just two goals and I felt sorry for our guys.
“The idea at the time was to try and win the second half and that was the simple message.”
Several Lincoln players returned to the locker room in Liverpool jerseys after the game.
And asked if it had been a special night for the club despite the lack of access to fans inside the stadium, Appleton added: “I think so.
