Two five-second penalties for pre-race start-of-practice violations ruin Lewis Hamilton’s attempt to equal Michael Schumacher’s winning record.

The stewards of the Russian GP have reversed the penalty points that had brought Lewis Hamilton close to a Formula 1 race ban.

In a revised verdict on the two penalties issued to Hamilton in Sochi for doing pre-race practice starts in the wrong place, the stewards said they had received a post-race clarification from Mercedes that it was they who had the fault and not the driver.

“The stewards received information from the team that the driver of car 44 had received an instruction from the team to take the practice outing at the wrong location,” read a revised statement from the stewards.

“This was confirmed by the Stewards after listening to the audio between the team and the driver.

“Based on this information, the Commissioners replace document 47 with this decision and therefore eliminate the penalty points imposed.”

One point for each offense had led Hamilton to 10 points over the past 12 months, just two from an automatic one-career suspension.

Now it returns to eight points of superlicense, four of the ban. Hamilton does not lose any points until November 17, two days after the Turkish GP in the time of four races.
