LEEDS UNITED responded to Karen Carney after the Amazon Prime expert claimed that they only won promotion to the Premier League due to the coronavirus.
Leeds put a score on by crushing West Brom 5-0 on Tuesday for three wins in their last four games.
Goals from Ezgjan Alioski, Jack Harrison, Rodrigo and Raphinha followed an incredible own goal by Romaine Sawyers.
But Carney, 33, questioned whether Marcelo Bielsa’s action-packed Leeds will be able to maintain his manic playing style for the remainder of the season.
The former England international, who won 144 games for the Lionesses, also claimed that Leeds only won promotion to the Championship last season after resting when the coronavirus brought the football season to a halt.
Carney, who played for both Arsenal and Chelsea, said: “They surpass everyone and give them credit. My only concern would be, will they explode at the end of the season like the last few seasons?
“In fact, I think they were promoted by Covid in terms of it giving them a little breathing space.
“I don’t know if they would have gotten up if they hadn’t had that rest.”
However, Leeds responded to Carney with a post on Twitter, and the post drew some criticism for inviting an ‘accumulation’ of sexist abuse targeting the former footballer.
It read: “‘Promoted due to Covid.’ Won the league by 10 points. Hello @primevideosport “.
As Leeds himself pointed out, he finished last season with 93 points, ten ahead of his closest rivals West Brom.
Marcelo Bielsa’s team also won their last five games before blocking came without conceding a goal.
However, the previous season, the last full season contested, Leeds had dominated in the opening months of the season before running out of steam and unable to advance into the play-offs.
Carney had kind words for Leeds’ brilliant performance against the Baggies on the night.
She added: “Two newly promoted teams and the difference between them in terms of class, quality and also fitness and intensity.
“Leeds were outstanding, we have criticized them in recent weeks for their clean sheet and how much they have conceded.
“Now there are two clean sheets in a row. I know we said about Meslier before, he’s unorthodox in what he does, but again two clean sheets.
“Fabulous performance and on attack as clinical as ever.”
