The council says they anticipated Leeds would remain at Tier 3 following the latest coronavirus Tier review.
Matt Hancock, the health secretary, made the announcement today (Wednesday) that he saw North Yorkshire move to the Very High level joining the rest of Yorkshire.
Leeds City Council Leader Judith Blake said they awaited the decision given the national and regional outlook regarding the virus.
It also revealed that since the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine was approved, the city is moving forward to offer a major vaccine rollout in Leeds starting next week.
She said: “Given the current regional and national landscape regarding the coronavirus, we anticipate that the government would make the decision to keep Leeds and the West Yorkshire region at level 3 today.
“As a council, we will continue to push the city’s case for the government for more meaningful help, while doing everything in our power to support local businesses and provide help to our most vulnerable residents.
“The recent rate hike in Leeds underscores how important it is that we continue to work very hard to keep ourselves and others safe.
“It is vitally important that at this crucial time we strictly follow current guidelines if we want to reduce transmission. Therefore, I urge everyone to continue to take the necessary steps in terms of social distancing, hand washing and use of masks.
“Today’s news that the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine has been approved for use in the UK is extremely positive and a very welcome step in the fight against coronavirus.
“With our partners in the NHS and the West Yorkshire region, we continue to advance our plans to offer a major vaccine rollout in Leeds starting next week.”
