Leeds 5-2 Newcastle: Jack Harrison scores a fantastic fifth as Leeds puts Newcastle at the sword | Football news

Three goals in the final 15 minutes, including a shout from Jack Harrison, sent Leeds back on the winning track with a 5-2 win over Newcastle, after their set pieces nearly cost them again at Elland Road.

The hosts, who had lost their last two and won only one of their first six league games at home, dominated the entire match but needed Patrick Bamford (35) to appear with his ninth goal of the season after Jeff Hendrick (26) scored against the run of the game.

Newcastle saw a loud penalty cry for Callum Wilson who waved goodbye not long before Rodrigo took a look at a good cross from Jack Harrison (61) to put Leeds in command, but once again the team from Marcelo Bielsa broke into a set piece, with Ciaran Clark heading the corner (65).

However, Leeds could not be denied their deserved victory, and Stuart Dallas (77) and Ezgjan Alioski (85) finished clinically before the impressive Harrison attacked from the edge of the area to complete all three points in style.

The result keeps Leeds 14th, but moves up to the level of 13th-ranked Newcastle, which has a game at hand, with 17 points.

How Leeds beat Newcastle …

Newcastle, which entered the game after back-to-back victories but with the coronavirus still affecting some of its squad and staff, got off to a brilliant start, with Isaac Hayden badly hitting a cross on the roof of Leeds’ net. But from around five minutes onwards, the hosts took control of the ball, with Liam Cooper testing Karl Darlow from a corner before Jack Harrison, Raphinha and Mateusz Klich sent the efforts off target.

However, the visitors marked an unlikely opening clinically. Fit-again Ryan Fraser had just seen a low shot saved by Illan Meslier, but when Wilson threw his cross there was nothing the keeper could do to prevent Hendrick from hitting his second of the season at the back post.

Leeds almost instantly resumed their assault on Newcastle’s goal: they had 14 shots in the first half, more than any team has had in the first 45 matches of a Premier League match this season, and, after Raphinha fired hard at Darlow and then savagely finished, the hosts pulled level.

Raphinha became a creator, cutting out an attractive center for Rodrigo to address the goal. Darlow touched the bar, but couldn’t recover in time to prevent Bamford from nodding on the follow-up.

Newcastle came out for the second half with renewed intent and felt they should have taken a penalty shot in the 53rd minute when Cooper slipped and bit into Wilson’s heel in the box. Referee Simon Hooper initially rejected it and VAR Kevin Friend endorsed it.

Eight minutes later, Leeds was in charge. Harrison brilliantly lowered Rodrigo’s pass and then shoved it back into the middle for the Spaniard to look home.

Team news

  • Marcelo Bielsa stayed with the same Leeds team that lost 2-1 to West Ham last time out.
  • Federico Fernández returned to the side after a spell with coronavirus, while Ryan Fraser was back after his hamstring problem. Miguel Almiron dropped to the bench, next to Emil Krafth.

However, Leeds had the advantage for just a few moments, when Clark headed in from a corner, the 12th set-piece goal Leeds has let in this season out of a total of 24.

Despite the setback, Bielsa’s team continued to have the lead and Dallas took their third after Sean Longstaff lost possession in his own box and Klich crossed to the back post.

Leeds didn’t stop there. Alioski whipped home after substitute Pablo Hernandez spotted him in space in the Newcastle area and Harrison grabbed the headlines with a wonderful shot at halftime in the final minutes, crashing his left leg from the edge of the area.

It was an emphatic shot for a dominant display from Bielsa’s side, the day the manager took over his 114th game with the club, the most he has been to one side throughout his career.
