Several boats have sunk in a lake in the US state of Texas during a parade to support President Donald Trump in the November elections, authorities say.

Authorities say the choppy water was likely caused by the large number of boats moving closely together on Lake Travis near the state capital, Austin.

The images showed ships with Trump campaign flags maneuvering closely.

Reports say that people had to be rescued from the water, but no one was injured.

The event, called the Lake Travis Trump Boat Parade, was organized on Facebook and more than 2,600 people identified as attendees.

The event was hosted by supporters of President Trump at Lake Travis.

An investigation has been launched and there is no evidence of any intentional acts, said Travis County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Kristen Dark.

“We responded to multiple calls from ships in distress, several of them sank,” he said. “We had an exceptional number of boats on the lake today … When they all started moving at the same time, there were big waves.”

The incident occurred around 12:00 (17:00 GMT) on Saturday, Labor Day weekend in the United States. The event page said the boats were asked to drive at 10 mph (16 km / h).

Paul Yura of the National Weather Service in Austin / San Antonio told the Associated Press that there were no storms in the area at the time of the parade.
