A mother and daughter are among three people who died in a series of related incidents in Kilmarnock on Thursday night.

Emma Robertson Coupland, 39, was found injured in a parking lot in front of Crosshouse Hospital in the city at 7.45 p.m. She received medical attention but died at the scene.

In the second incident 20 minutes later on Portland Street, his 24-year-old daughter Nicole Anderson was stabbed.

Emergency services came and took her to Crosshouse Hospital, where she later died.

The latest incident, a fatal traffic accident, took place on the C50, a road between the B7036 and the A76.

A 40-year-old man who was driving the car was pronounced dead at the scene. It has not been named.

The families of the victims have been informed.

Scottish police said investigations so far have indicated the incidents were related.

An investigation is underway to establish the exact circumstances of what happened.

Officers are not looking for anyone else as part of the investigation and there is no ongoing threat to the public.

Chief Superintendent Faroque Hussain said: “Several locations remain cordoned off while officers continue to conduct investigations.”

He added: “It is understandable that people are surprised by what has happened. We are still in the process of establishing all the circumstances, however I would like to assure people that there is no broader threat to the community.”

“The officers will be on patrol and anyone with a concern can approach these officers.”

The hospital was closed after the first incident, but was lifted around 10:30 p.m. Thursday night when police declared it safe to do so.

By Friday morning, the hospital’s A&E department and main entrance were open and operating normally, while two police vans full of officers remained outside with police tape around part of the parking lot.

Ahead of the daily Scottish government coronavirus At Friday’s lunchtime briefing, Deputy Prime Minister John Swinney spoke about the “gruesome” events.

He said: “A tragedy like this would be impossible to understand at any time, but after the events of last year it is particularly shocking that such an incident took place in an NHS hospital.”

He added: “And again I want to send my condolences to the family and friends of those who have been killed.”

A spokesperson for Number 10 said: “The prime minister’s thoughts are with everyone involved and he thanks the police and health personnel for their response.”

Several roads in downtown Kilmarnock remain closed, including Portland Street, West George Street and Garden Street via Hill Street, as well as the crash site, with detours in place.
