A teenager was reportedly shot in the mouth a few meters from his home while on his way to school.
The 15-year-old, who remains in serious condition in hospital tonight, is believed to have been shot in the face on his first day back from confinement.
Neighbors heard a heartrending scream after the gunshot rang out from the street.
One man said the boy’s family rushed out to be by his side after the blast.
He said: “I went out and his mom and his brothers were in towels, et cetera. It was just me and his family.
“It’s one of those horrible things you see, it was lying on the road.
“We did what we could to get the ambulance to arrive as quickly as possible.”
He added: “I saw someone alone in a gray Saab. I looked out the window and when I went to put my clothes on and run downstairs, he was gone. “
Two hours after the shooting, armed police arrested a 15-year-old boy from the Woodbridge area on suspicion of attempted murder.
A neighbor told the Mirror that the location of the attack suggested the perpetrator was lurking.
He said: “My son heard the shot at 8.28 am. There was a significant pause [then] a scream, perhaps from someone who witnessed what happened.
“Apparently he was shot in the mouth. Today would have been his first day back to school, so someone knew exactly where he would be. The boy who was shot comes from a good family. “
A father said the children took refuge in his home after a woman was heard shouting: “Run, someone has been shot.”
Residents say paramedics performed CPR on the Year 11 student on a green at the luxury estate in Kesgrave, Suffolk, before he was taken to hospital.
A witness said someone hid in a backyard moments after the attack and used a hooded cap to cover something they were wearing.
The teen suspect was arrested five miles from the scene, in Ipswich, around 11 a.m.
The shooting took place about 300 meters from Kesgrave High School, where the victim had to return for the first time in almost six months.
Principal Julia Upton told parents, “Students are to remain in school and will remain safe in contact with the police.”
Two PCs were on duty outside the school throughout the day, with more officers present when the students left at 3.30 pm.
A forensic team combed the street where the attack occurred.
Education Secretary Gavin Williamson told the Commons: “I think we are all shocked … to learn about the incident in which a young man was seriously injured on the way to school.”
