KATE Garraway has revealed that her seriously ill husband Derek Draper told her “I can’t go on” in a harrowing call from his hospital bed.
Hours before Kate presented Good Morning Britain live to the nation one day last November, her barely conscious husband had said he was struggling to cope.
Derek, 53, had spent months in intensive care after the coronavirus devastated his body, causing his liver, kidneys and heart to fail.
The continued suffering in the midst of his nightmare scenario left him thinking about death.
Kate told the Mirror: “Derek was in and out of consciousness and when he said that, it was absolutely devastating, but it showed me that he was still there. Even though it was terrible to think that his spirits were so low.”
On Tuesday night, Kate’s Finding Derek documentary will air on ITV. Viewers will see the station have a heartwarming Facetime call in which Derek says, “Kate, there is no way out. There is no way out.”
“It got to the point where I just think about shit. Just fit. “
She responds: “How in dying?”
Derek tearfully says, “Yeah … I don’t know how to deal with it, I don’t know how to deal with it.”
Former Labor Party adviser Derek may never make a full recovery after his illness.
Speaking on The One Show last week, Kate explained that her brain “is no longer her friend.”
She said: “He is someone who both in this time before I met him, when he was in politics, and in all the work that he has done in mental health, because that is his thing now.
“Your brain has always been your best friend and you have lived off your wits and now all of a sudden your brain, as we all know controls your body, is no longer your friend and is struggling to get out.”
Kate started working on the documentary in August and was hoping to meet her husband at home before it aired, but that has not been the case.
While the documentary shows footage of Derek in the hospital, Kate wants the piece to educate rather than terrify.
“We don’t want to scare people with what happened,” he told GMB.
“When we talk about prolonged Covid: respiratory problems, fatigue, anxiety … it is much more widespread than that.”
Kate recently shared the first photo of Derek fighting for his life in the hospital.
In the emotional trailer for Finding Derek, he says: “Derek is the sickest person the medical team has treated this year.
“Will he be able to return or will he be alive but will no longer be the person he was?”
The screen goes black when a message says, “A year later, Derek is still in the hospital.”
Earlier this month, she was told that her husband Derek could be “locked up” forever.
After contracting the virus over a year ago, Derek faced an uphill battle to survive.
Countless infections have left holes in his lungs and the battle has seen him lose eight kilos.
However, Kate said doctors still can’t tell her if Derek will recover, and they have warned him that he can remain “locked in” forever.
“The worst moment was when they said he could be locked up forever,” he told The Sunday Times.
“And I thought, this is a horror story. I don’t know if he will ever have any kind of life again. We just don’t know.”
In the first months of Derek’s poor health, a hospital error caused Kate to tell her that Derek “may have died,” and she faced an agonizing 24-hour wait to find out the truth.
She said: “I was sitting on the phone, waiting to find out if he had died or not.”
Kate was forced to wait more than a day for news of her husband’s condition and had no idea if he was alive.
She added: “Then it turned out that someone with a name similar to yours had died.”
