Viewers tuning in to watch Kate Garraway’s heartbreaking documentary Finding Derek have struggled to hold back tears in the opening moments.
A distraught Kate, who revealed that she had not washed or brushed her hair for three days, showed her phone to the camera and showed a photo of her husband Derek Draper with tubes sticking out of his nose and mouth.
“This is in a full vegetative state,” Kate said. “It’s grim.”
The Good Morning Britain host also described her husband as the “smartest man” she had ever met when faced with the question of whether the man she had married 16 years ago would ever return.
One onlooker said: “Wow, they’re crying already! What a strong and brave family you are!
Another wrote: “Defo on the verge of sobbing for an hour straight in this Kate Garraway documentary.”
She has also inspired other people who have lost loved ones to leave home with her courage.
One viewer wrote: “so strong, honest, open. Having lost someone close to me due to covid, I have not left the house since. That changes today. His strength has inspired me to get some fresh air, a walk, something more than sitting inside. I respect her. “
Derek, a former Labor Party adviser, was rushed to hospital last March, before slipping into a coma in April.
He woke up three months later, but has yet to make a full recovery and remains in intensive care.
Although you no longer have Covid-19, you are now dealing with the sequelae including kidney failure, liver and pancreas damage, and heart failure.
Doctors told Kate that her husband is the sickest Covid patient they have ever treated.
Derek was first admitted to the hospital on the advice of Good Morning Britain’s health editor, Dr. Hilary Jones.
Kate has now renovated the ground floor of the family home for her return.
She says she is hopeful that he will recover, as her Chorley accent has now returned.
The host talked about how they have been able to exchange words, but cannot have full conversations about Good Morning Britain yet.
She explained: “That has regressed a bit from the documentary, it must be said. This year has not been so good ”.
