Jurgen Klopp reflects on Mohamed Salah’s position as Liverpool consider a midfield review

Liverpool probed new depths with a record home loss to Chelsea on Thursday.

Mason Mount’s goal was enough to send the Reds to a fifth straight loss at Anfield with a 1-0 loss to the Londoners.

The champions now have a quick turnaround as they prepare for relegation-threatened Fulham on Sunday.

And here we look forward to the changes Jurgen Klopp could make when his team is next in action.

Defensive concerns

With the Champions League second leg against RB Leipzig just three days later, Klopp will consider major changes across the team.

However, your options in defense largely depend on who is available.

Neco Williams could be poised to make his first start in two months in place of Trent Alexander-Arnold as a right back, although, with Kostas Tsimikas unable to bench midweek, Andy Robertson may have to continue as a left back.

Alisson Becker has returned to the consideration of the first team and will be the favorite to remain between the suits.

In central defender, Nat Phillips and Ben Davies are expected to be available after being absent against Chelsea, but Ozan Kabak is a big doubt after taking a hit.

Fabinho returned midweek at the heart of the defense, with Rhys Williams on the bench.

Midfield review?

The rotation is almost certain against Fulham, with a change in formation, 4-2-3-1 or a previously employed midfield diamond in recent weeks, also on the horizon.

Gini Wijnaldum and Thiago Alcantara looked tired against Chelsea, while Curtis Jones struggled for consistent impact.

James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain came off the bench as Naby Keita is back in shape.

There is also the possibility of Fabinho moving to midfield, in case there are enough other centrals available.

Salah’s question

Jurgen Klopp surprised with his decision to replace Mohamed Salah on Thursday, citing that the player appeared to lack intensity.

The Reds boss could then choose to leave Salah on the bench, or possibly move him to a more central position in case there is a change in tactics in the offing.

Diogo Jota is on hold to enter the front row after proving his fitness with a half-hour cameo, with neither Sadio Mane nor Roberto Firmino anywhere near his best against Chelsea.

Divock Origi and Xherdan Shaqiri are also waiting for their opportunity, neither of which has started in more than a month.
