Jurgen Klopp has taken an odd stance on Marko Grujic, according to reports. The midfielder is back at Liverpool after a two-year loan.
The Mirror reports that Klopp has changed his mind about Grujic this summer. Instead of unloading the Serbian, it will give him the opportunity to earn a place in the Liverpool squad.
Grujic is back after two years with Hertha BSC, two productive years too. The player impressed in the Bundesliga and increased his stock. Enough for Goal to report that there are seven teams looking to sign him.
Both reports claim Liverpool would want around £ 20 million for the player if they sold him. Although, that may not happen now.
Instead, Grujic has a chance to earn a place in the Liverpool squad. And that is quite surprising.
Looking away
As you’ve probably heard, Liverpool supposedly want Thiago. However, there is a problem, as ESPN explains here. In short, the Reds feel they have too many midfielders and cannot justify a move for the Spaniard.
Maybe they could if Gini Wijnaldum left, but that depends on someone giving him cash. And that’s unlikely, given that it’s available for free in less than a year.
Now this part makes sense to us. Liverpool have many midfielders. There’s Wijnaldum, of course, plus Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita, and Curtis Jones. And we may have forgotten someone.
Apart from Jones, they are all senior players who also hope to play with some regularity. So we can understand if Liverpool don’t feel like they have room for Thiago.
But then why does Klopp think he has room for Grujic? One possible answer is that you see them as different “additions.” One, Thiago, is a player who will want to play almost every week. Liverpool may not have room for that with the senior options at the club.
The other, Grujic, may not have the same expectations. There is room for a squad player but not for a first XI player, in other words.
But of course, Grujic is 24 years old, surely he is close to wanting regular football. And any game you play will take away from others, no matter how uneven.
The other option is that one of the reports is wrong, of course. But at first glance, with the information we have, this seems like a strange move by Klopp.
