Jurgen Klopp will not be swayed by “selfish” transfer decisions, as he expanded the reason for allowing Rhian Brewster to leave Liverpool.
Brewster completed a £ 23.5 million move to Sheffield United on Friday, with the Reds negotiating a three-year guaranteed buyback option and a 15% sell clause.
The 20-year-old is still highly valued by Klopp, who, just days after his arrival at Liverpool in October 2015, saw the youngster score in his U-18 debut at Kirkby Academy.
Brewster’s further development was hampered by spending more than a year on the sidelines following a serious knee injury, after which he made his long-awaited debut in a League Cup victory at MK Dons in September 2019. .
But after only four appearances in the senior category, the forward’s first-team options were further limited by the recent arrival of Diogo Jota.
Klopp admitted on Friday that he would have intended to hold onto Brewster if the forward had been in his 20s.
However, the Reds boss has no intention of keeping the younger players if the size of the team means they won’t be able to constantly challenge for a starting spot.
“It’s always like this, honestly,” Klopp said. “If I’m selfish, that never really helps, to be honest.
“I need a player in the right place and at the right time, so that means he is ready to fight but has all the tools to fight for the position that the squad gives him the opportunity to fight for.”

Klopp added: “Everyone should know, all young people should know, that we don’t keep them here at all costs, just that we have a solution for one or two games a year. This is not how we work.
“If so, we always want to try solutions. We want to use these kids on specific days but for that they need to take some steps in their development and sometimes we are the right place for them to take this development and sometimes we are not.
“And that’s what we have to admit, that’s it.”
Liverpool are aiming to continue their 100% start to their Premier League defense when they travel to Aston Villa on Sunday.
Klopp is expected to strongly rotate his side following Thursday’s Carabao Cup fourth round outing at home to Arsenal on penalties.
