Jurgen Klopp has hinted that Wednesday’s trip to Newcastle will be too early for Thiago Alcantara.
Thiago has not played for Liverpool since the Merseyside derby with Everton on October 17.
The Spanish international was injured late by a reckless tackle by Richarlison, an incident that saw the Blues forward with a direct red card.
In total, Thiago has missed 16 games in the two and a half months since then, but has returned to training with the rest of his teammates.
The former Bayern Munich star participated in training on December 24 before a light session on Christmas Day at the club’s AXA Center.
Speaking on the heels of Sunday’s 1-1 draw with West Brom, Klopp said Thiago’s situation was “quite promising” before the champions ended 2020 in the Northeast.
But when asked if he was looking forward to getting Thiago back into action for the match at St James’ Park, Klopp erred on the side of caution.
“I like to see all my guys play and Thiago, he only played a few minutes before he got injured, so of course we are looking forward to him,” Klopp said.
“But I don’t know if it can [play]. Not very likely, let me put it that way.
“He needs a few sessions, he was really out for a long time after a really tough challenge and it was a fitting hit.
“Nothing broke, nothing broke, but obviously it took time. This takes time, so we can’t rush things. So I don’t know.”
Klopp is also likely to run out of Naby Keita and Joel Matip for Steve Bruce’s game against the Magpies.
