Tottenham manager José Mourinho says he does not want referees to use subjectivity for handball decisions.
New, tougher handball rules cost Spurs last Sunday when Newcastle drew with a controversial late penalty after an Andy Carroll header struck the back of Eric Dier’s arm.
There were also two highly questionable penalties per handball in the space of four minutes during Tottenham’s 7-2 win over Maccabi Haifa in the Europa League on Thursday.
In the first incident, the Spurs awarded a penalty when the ball hit Matt Doherty’s arm at point-blank range, shortly before a penalty was awarded at the other end when a Ben Davies cross slammed into Ernest Mabouka’s arm.
The Premier League and Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), the body responsible for referees, said this week that they are prepared to pressure the IFAB to change the handball law.
Premier League clubs met remotely on Tuesday and asked PGMOL to “change their focus” on how they interpret handball decisions.
The Premier League would like to see a more subjective approach to handball refereeing for the remainder of this season, but Mourinho is not convinced.
“I don’t like subjectivity in football because subjectivity usually goes on the side of suffering,” he said.
“I don’t like subjectivity and to be honest with you, the email that was sent commenting on the previous sanctions and the possible subjectivity to come, I didn’t read them.
“I did not read them and I am not interested in reading them because I prefer not to.”
Spurs head to Manchester United on Sunday, live Sky sports, for their fourth game in eight days, but Mourinho insists there will be no excuses against his former club, even though United have only played once midweek.
“I’m used to it, it’s the last, it’s the last game that I don’t want to complain about,” he added.
“I’ve moaned enough already, I moaned with real things in my hands and I don’t think anyone would disagree with me when I complained, even complained, about the situation.
“But now it’s just one more game, it’s just United’s game, no excuses.
“They only have one game for the week and it was yesterday and probably most of the players who played yesterday are not going to play on Sunday.”
