José Mourinho praised Heung-Min Son and Harry Kane for doing “special things” as the duo continued their unprecedented partnership.
No combination has scored as many goals against each other in a Premier League season than the 13 that Kane e Son have created and scored this season, with Kane becoming Son’s supplier to score Tottenham’s second in a 3-0 win over Leeds on Saturday lunchtime.
Kane, a two-time Premier League Golden Boot winner, tops the division’s assist charts this season, having created just one goal for his teammates in the entirety of the 2019/20 season.
When asked if the pair were the best attacking pair in the Premier League, Mourinho said BT sport: “The understanding [between Kane and Son] it’s good. Against Leeds it was important to have mobility in attack because they score from man to man and if you stay in static positions you give them an easy job. When you have mobility it is more difficult for them.
“That move of Kane showing up on the right side and Sonny in a late position, it fit well with our game plan. They’re doing special things this season.”
Speaking at his post-match press conference, he added: “They are very good players, as has been seen for many years. They have also played together for many years, that plus the way we want them to interact brings goals.” .
“I want more goals, especially more goals from other players, but today the second goal is great. It’s great because it was something we talked about against a team that defends like Leeds does, it is very important to have mobility, so to have a striker on the right wing and a winger at the front post is very important from a strategic point of view. “
Son and Kane have scored nearly four-fifths of Tottenham’s goal tally between them this season, but Mourinho enjoyed seeing a rare shot from Toby Alderweireld to mark Spurs’ third against Leeds, saying another of his teammates Team winger Steven Bergwijn has the knack to add on his return as well.
“We need him to score goals, we know he has the ability, if you go back a year, the first game, he scored an incredible goal. We know he has the ability for that,” he said.
“He is accumulating physical problems, I do not know if you could understand but even in the last 10 minutes he was holding his groin, the adductor, he has had trouble stopping it from time to time to train correctly and at high intensity, but it gives very good things to the team. I think that if he improves his state he will score goals.
Bielsa: We had moments
Marcelo Bielsa followed his rival in praising Kane e Son’s performance, but said his team made “unforced errors” by allowing Tottenham to score three unanswered goals.
He said: “We had moments and in general the first half was good. It was better in the first 30 minutes and more even in the last 15 minutes of the first half.
“The beginning of the second half was our worst moment in the game. And at the end, it was again positive.
“There are two aspects that unbalanced the game. The forwards of the opponents were very damaging and difficult to contain. We made some unforced errors that facilitated their attack but we had a good offensive production. What we had to do was not lose the ball in our own half.
“There was a lot of danger in the second balls and in the set pieces. We could have aspired to a closer game.
“We’ve been through similar times like this already and there are improvements that are needed, of course. For Chelsea and Manchester United, this game was clearly better. But there are steps we need to take that we haven’t taken yet.” “
