Is this the end of the road for Dele Alli at Tottenham?
Spurs may have advanced to the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup, but the game did not go as planned for the already criticized Alli.
On Wednesday he got off to a rare start at the bet365 stadium and although he came close to scoring a couple of times, Alli did not make the most of his opportunity.
Alli was substituted shortly after Stoke’s draw in the 53rd minute, but goals from Ben Davies and Harry Kane sealed a 3-1 win for the Spurs.
The midfielder was visibly upset when he left the field, showing his frustration kicking water bottles as he walked to the stands.
José Mourinho has publicly criticized the player on more than one occasion and accused Alli of ‘creating problems’ for his team after the game.
This did not sit well with former Tottenham player Jamie O’Hara, who has accused Mourinho of “killing Alli’s confidence.”
O’Hara told talkSPORT Breakfast: “I think Mourinho is doing a great job, but I don’t like the way he treats Dele Alli.
“What do you expect from the boy? You are not playing with him, he has not been involved, he is just sitting on the bench, much less as a starter.
“Okay, he made a mistake and they scored, but I don’t think he was very poor in the game; he works hard.
“I just think that when you go out and take a player out of the press, he’s a young player, I think he needs to help him.
“What is he gaining by going out in the press and unearthing that one performance? It’s only killing your confidence more.
“It is an investment for this club, it is an asset for the club. Whether it’s in your plans or not, you don’t want to kill his confidence so much that you lose him completely.
“He did well, he made things happen. In that 10th role you have to bond and make things happen, but I don’t think that’s Dele Alli’s game. He is a player who makes that go further and scores goals on people’s backs ”.
So what’s next for Alli? Well, talkSPORT’s Darren Gough thinks moving abroad would do the England international a lot of good.
“Dele under the right direction is a fantastic player. I think his best option at the moment, simply because of the publicity that surrounds him, would be to go abroad, ”Gough said.
“I absolutely believe that for Dele, I think it would be good for him to go abroad, to get out of the public eye.
“He is a great personality, all brands love him, he makes a lot of money off the field and I think it would be better for him to get away from this country and play football abroad.”
But maybe there is a future for Alli in the Premier League, with Liverpool fan Alfie calling Drive on Wednesday and saying he would be a great fit at Anfield.
Said, “I feel like he [Alli] I like it [Roberto] Firmino … I’d have him in Liverpool any day. He’s smart, he plays between the lines.
“Mourinho is the wrong coach [for him]. Mourinho is the type of coach in which the player needs to establish himself … but less [Jurgen] Klopp, would offer a hand over his shoulder.
“It would be a challenge to start. I could play where [Sadio] Mane plays, could play Firmino. He’s smart that way. “
