Joel Matip’s absence explained when Nat Phillips starts with Liverpool

Nat Phillips has had just one second Premier League start for Liverpool this afternoon.

The center-back will line up alongside Fabinho at the heart of the Reds’ defense for the Premier League clash at Brighton and Hove Albio n.

The duo have been paired by Jurgen Klopp with Joel Matip not including starting the previous two games this week. There is no indication of injury to the defender.

Takumi Minamino has a first Premier League start to the season with Sadio Mane rested on the bench.

The Japanese international is joined in a strong line of attack by Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino.

Gini Wijnaldum and James Milner line up in what is expected to be a two-man central midfield, with Jordan Henderson back among the substitutes who missed the final two games with a hamstring problem.

Andy Robertson returns as a left back, while Neco Williams continues as a right back to make his first top flight outing of the season. Alisson Becker is between the sticks.
