Speaking to reporters in Wilmington, Delaware, Biden said: “We don’t want a protected border.
“We want to make sure that we work too hard to make Ireland work.
“I have spoken to the British Prime Minister, I have spoken to the Taoiseach, I have spoken to others and I have spoken to the French.
“The idea of the northern and southern border being closed again is simply not correct.
“We just have to keep the border open.”
Biden, who has made much of his Irish heritage, previously said that there would be no trade deal between the UK and the US if the UK violates the terms of the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement.
Boris Johnson, who argues that parts of the deal are an infringement of British sovereignty, has been threatening to make this move.
Speaking in September, the then presidential candidate said: “Any trade agreement between the United States and the United Kingdom must depend on respecting the agreement and preventing the return of a hard border. Period.”

Biden was vice president in 2016 when Barack Obama intervened decisively and controversially in the EU referendum campaign to warn against the low vote.
The then president said he would put Britain “at the end of the queue” for any future trade deal.
Biden has also surprised with his decision to name Antony Blinken, a former undersecretary of state, as his top national security adviser.
Speaking on the Podcast Save the World, Blinken described the Brexit process as “the dog that caught the car and then the car backs up and runs over the dog, it’s a total disaster.”

He added that peace in Northern Ireland would become “much more difficult to maintain” as a result of the UK leaving the EU, adding that “so many young Britons feel the rug has been pulled from them.”
Biden triumphed in the US presidential election earlier this month.
Donald Trump continues to claim that the election was rigged against him and has taken legal action in several states, although no state results have yet been overturned.
However, the president agreed to allow the transition process to begin, which means that Biden will receive top-secret intelligence reports.

Biden has spoken repeatedly about his Irish heritage.
Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage, who joined Trump in the election campaign, argued that Biden would be bad for the UK ahead of the presidential election.
He said: “Donald Trump is pro-British in a way that Joe Biden never was and never will be.
“A Biden victory means a return to the days of Barack Obama, when he flew to Berlin when he crossed the Atlantic instead of London.”
Johnson was one of the first world leaders to speak to Biden after his electoral victory.
Later, he tweeted: “The United States is our important ally and I look forward to working closely on our shared priorities, from climate change to trade and security.”
While Britain formally left the EU in late January, it remains in a Brexit transition period until early next year.

During this time, the UK continues to contribute to the EU budget and must follow Brussels regulations in a number of policy areas.
Currently, the Government is negotiating to replace this with a new trade agreement starting in January.
However, no agreement has yet been reached between the UK and the EU and the two sides remain divided on fishing rights and “level playing field” regulations.
