The Jockey Club executive director resigned after an independent investigation confirmed allegations of harassment, racist comments and the circulation of offensive material.
Delia Bushell, who had been in office since September 2019, submitted her resignation on Sunday, after being informed that disciplinary actions had been initiated “for serious misconduct.”
It is understood that the attorney who led the investigation also found evidence of witness tampering by Bushell.
The Jockey Club board concluded that it was “unsustainable” for her to remain in the position.
The Jockey Club, which operates 15 racetracks including Aintree, Cheltenham, Newmarket and Epsom Downs, announced that it has appointed Nevin Truesdale as the group’s interim CEO following Bushell’s sudden departure.
In a letter posted in the Racing Post, Bushell expressed his “shock and sadness” at the decision.
She added: “I have been subjected to undeserved, dishonorable, bullying behavior from people I previously held in high regard and trusted.
“Given the toxicity of the work environment in which I find myself, the predetermined discipline, and the clear and continuing threats to my reputation, I have no choice but to accept the repulsive conduct described in this letter and resign with immediate effect.”
BBC Sport understands that the Cricket Board for England and Wales, where Bushell is a director, will review the situation.
