Jamie Carragher believes that Liverpool are suffering from the absence of a clear ‘number 10’ who can “play the final pass”.
The Reds fell for the fifth consecutive loss in the Premier League at Anfield when they lost 1-0 to Chelsea on Thursday night.
It was another match where Jurgen Klopp’s side struggled to create clear chances, meaning they have now scored once at home in their last six games.
With Liverpool struggling to push with the same intensity as previous seasons, given their massive injuries and hectic match schedule, Carragher believes they are lacking a natural number 10 that could offer them more creativity in the final third.
“I saw Gini Wijnaldum in the second half do a one-two, they want to do things and they just can’t get there,” Carragher told Sky Sports.
“I don’t know if they are the same players who play week after week, after four or five years of high intensity football. Who knows what it is?
“Maybe we’ll almost get to the bottom of next season when we see the crowd come back and maybe a more normal season, but they just don’t seem to be doing well in terms of energy and pace at the moment.
“Jurgen Klopp said their pressure is better than any number 10, but when you look at Liverpool, you feel like they need a number 10, they need that type of player because the pressure is not there.

“The teams have come and have defended themselves deep and they don’t have anyone between the lines to play that pass, they have Coutinho who left and built in other areas.
“I’m not saying they should go and buy that, but without the real pressing quality that they have now in terms of creating opportunities, they really don’t have anyone who can make that final pass.”
