Jamie Carragher explains why he wouldn’t have wanted Liverpool to sign Lionel Messi

Jamie Carragher wanted to see Lionel Messi in Manchester City blue and not Liverpool red.

Carragher acknowledges that Barcelona’s rebellious Argentine would have lit up the Premier League if City had managed to capture the six-time Ballon d’Or winner.

He said: “If you are asking me as a football lover if I wanted Messi to come to the Premier League then absolutely yes.

“Did you want me to go to Man City? Yes, because I only wanted him in the Premier League.

“I wanted to see it every week, and it would have been amazing.

Carragher says he didn’t want to see Messi in Liverpool

“Did you want Liverpool to sign you? No. If I was a City fan, would I have wanted City to sign you? Not.

“Taking a step back and looking at the numbers involved and the age of the player, I’m not sure I wanted my team to sign him.

“I wanted Messi in the Premier League and if he had gone to City I would have loved it.

“Would the city have improved? Of course.

Messi has already accepted that he will stay at Barcelona

“But Liverpool still beat Barcelona 4-0, and Barcelona did not win the league this year and have not won the Champions League for a long time.

“We are talking about one of the best players, but just because you get it there is no guarantee of success.”
