James’ goal threat draws attention despite Chelsea’s loss of a clean sheet

Everton 1-0 Chelsea

  • Goals: Gylfi Sigurdsson (£ 6.8 million)
  • Attend: Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£ 7.9 million)
  • Cousin: Sigurdsson x3, Jordan Pickford (£ 4.9 million) x2, Ben Godfrey (£ 5.0 million) x1

A Gylfi sigurdsson (£ 6.8 million) gave Everton the points against Chelsea in a game as monotonous as the December night it was played.

The Icelandic international, again in the starting eleven after James Rodriguez (£ 7.7m) succumbed to calf injury, sent away goalkeeper Edouard mendy (£ 5.2 million) on the wrong track from the spot to secure just the second win for the Toffees in eight league games.

The home team seemed to react positively to the fans’ return to Goodison Park, although the 2,000 allowed were not exactly treated as a thriller, with an effort that far exceeded the quality of the night.

MENDY MALFUNCTION

The Everton winner came later Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£ 7.9 million) was awkwardly brought down by Mendy.

That was two errors in judgment in a week for the Chelsea goalkeeper after he over-committed against Leeds, allowing Patrick Bamford (£ 6.2 million) to round it up and score in Game Week 11.

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard was in no mood to blame his man after the game.

It has been fantastic since he was here. Nor do I think it was clearly his mistake. The team’s mentality for dealing with second balls in the early parts of the game wasn’t that great.

But after having deservedly taken credit for helping the team score five clean sheets in seven league games, Mendy’s ricks were especially ill-timed given that Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers have been buying defenders from the Blues recently. .

Kurt zouma (£ 5.7 million) and Reece james (£ 5.3 million) were transferred by 151,000 and 134,000 bosses respectively before Gameweek 12.

Without Mendy’s mistake, his money would have been well spent, as Everton rarely seemed to score before or after Sigurdsson’s penalty.

But a defense that looked so impressive with its new goalkeeper in place is now showing flickering signs of vulnerability, slightly worrisome times for the owners of Zouma (23.5%), James (17.7%) and the most popular of all. Ben chilwell (£ 6.2 million and 35.9%).

SCOUSE SERENDIPITY

Injuries to both sides of first choice Lucas Digne (£ 6.1 million) and Seamus coleman (£ 4.8m) forced Everton coach Carlo Ancelotti to line up a baseline made up entirely of central halves.

Unsurprisingly, the move fostered defensive strength at the expense of the threat of attack.

While Chelsea wingers sent more than 12 crosses between them, their Everton counterparts Mason Holgate (£ 4.8 million) and Ben godfrey (£ 5.0 million) achieved none.

Ancelotti praised the crowd, and their defense, after the match:

The fans made a big difference, it was a totally different environment. Tonight we won because of the spirit, not because of the quality of the game, we didn’t have much ball, but we defended very well.

That spirit earned his team only its second clean sheet of the season, but with players like Leicester, Arsenal and Manchester City in the next four Gameweeks, it’s unlikely to convince many coaches to take advantage of the Toffees’ new defensive prowess. , even if those last two meetings will take place at home.

LAMPARD’S LAMENT

Even facing four center-backs, Chelsea should have created more than three goal attempts from the 73% possession they enjoyed, something Lampard acknowledged.

We do not splash his goal with great opportunities. We weren’t at our best. We don’t handle the physicality well in the early parts of the game.

The Blues hit the wood twice, from James and the worker Mason Mount (£ 6.8 million), but it wasn’t a good game to be an attacker, and at Calvert-Lewin (60.1%) and Timo Werner (£ 9.5 million and 21.6%), two of the most popular were on display at FPL.

The attendance of the Everton man made it a second straight week with a return, and just one blank in six games, for his massive ownership.

But its tough schedule meant more than 152,000 bosses weren’t around to enjoy it, though inbound and outbound transfers are running hand in hand heading into Gameweek 13 right now.

Many Werner owners also jumped ship and none of the forwards offered much prospect of goal on Saturday night, with only two attempts (none on target) between them.

Sigurdsson had to be the most outstanding player in attack, with two attempts and six impressive chances created: Zouma, with two, was the next best provider.

Lampard entered the losing game Hakim Ziyech (£ 8.1 million) and Christian pulisic (£ 8.2m) with hamstring injuries and then spoke about the issue:

Players who are explosive at the top end of the field are having trouble. That is the big picture. It’s frustrating. Each team has great squads. Everyone can pack their banks. Did we miss the open players today? We did it, because they are great players for us.

[Pulisic] it had to be left out. I was uncomfortable training this week and yesterday.

And with Kai havertz (£ 8.3 million) again looking anonymous, his attack options are dwindling just as accessories are doing the opposite.

Now it’s two blanks in three Gameweeks for the Blues and their next schedule (wol, WHU, ars, AVL, MCI) could well mean more of the same.

Everton XI (4-3-2-1): Pickford; Keane, Mina, Holgate, Godfrey; Sigurdsson (Gomes 83), Allan, Doucouré; Richarlison (Kenny 90), Iwobi (Davies 86); Calvert-Lewin.

Chelsea XI (4-3-3): E Mendy; Chilwell, Zouma, T Silva, R James; Monte, Kanté, Kovacic (Gilmour 82); Werner, Giroud, Havertz (Abraham 68).
