Donald Trump has declined to make clear what crime he believes Barack Obama has committed, a day after suggesting that he was responsible for “by far the greatest political crime in US history.”
Amidst a string of claims that his predecessor’s administration acted inappropriately when it launched investigations into Russia’s alleged interference in the 2016 election and contacts between Russian officials and members of his campaign, including the toppled adviser to National Security Michael Flynn, the President was asked what precise crime he alleged.
“Mr. President, in one of the Mother’s Day tweets you seem to accuse President Obama of the greatest political crime in the history of the United States. Those were your words. What crime do you exactly accuse President Obama of committing and do you think the Justice Department should prosecute him, “asked Philip Rucker of the Washington Post at a White House press conference.

“Obamagate,” the president said, using a word that his tweets set trends on social media. “It has been happening for a long time. It has been happening even before I was elected, and it is unfortunate that it happened.”
When asked again exactly what he believed Obama had done, Trump told the reporter: “You know what the crime is. Crime is very obvious to everyone. All you have to do is read the newspapers except yours.
Trump’s outburst, one day over the weekend in which he posted more than 100 tweets, came after his justice department announced it would withdraw the criminal case against Flynn, a former army general who joined the campaign. Trump in 2015, and briefly served as his senior national security adviser.
He was forced to resign after it emerged that he had lied to Vice President Mike Pence about his conversations with the then-Russian diplomat in the United States.
Flynn cooperated with the nearly two-year investigation overseen by Robert Mueller and pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI. Later he tried to retract his confession.
Trump and his supporters have long viewed the case against Flynn as “outrageous.” The president claimed that the investigation into the 61-year-old former soldier, which was launched before taking office, was part of a broader effort by Obama to undermine and “spy on him.”
It has never provided any evidence to support such claims, and Obama has dismissed them. In fact, an investigation last year by Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz found sufficient cause for the FBI’s actions.
While he said officers had made mistakes in the way they sought Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act orders to monitor a member of the Trump campaign team, Carter Page, Horowitz said he “found no documentary or testimonial evidence influenced by political bias or inadequate motivation. ” The decision to open the FBI investigation.
Last week, after the Justice Department announced the decision to drop the case against Flynn, Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi said: “Attorney General Barr’s politicization of justice is limitless.”
In one of his weekend tweets, done as the number of Coronavirus tweets in the US USA Approaching 80,000, Trump simply wrote, “Obamagate.”
