It may have been a pretty terrible year, but 2020 just produced a real rarity – a white Christmas!
After flurries of light snow overnight in parts of North Lincolnshire, as well as some other areas of England, the Met Office today officially confirmed that it qualifies for the rare holiday status.
This morning a heavy frost and those heavy snow showers have caused some pretty wintry scenes in many parts of our region.
The Met Office says the Humber region is one of the areas where official confirmation has been given, with snowfall recorded in Leconfield in the East Riding of Yorkshire.
Grimsby Live has also received footage from Sophie Barber of snowfall that fell in the early hours on the Willows Estate in Grimsby.
While it won’t be enough to build a snowman, or probably even a big snowball in most places, it will certainly add a festive touch to this December 25th.
On Twitter, a Met Office spokesperson said: “Good morning everyone, we just received official confirmation that this #Christmas is white! Leconfield in Humberside reported #snow falling at 5am, and Wattisham in Suffolk also reported recent snow at this time.
The remainder of Christmas Day is expected to be mostly dry and bright, with an ice warning until later this morning, following nighttime snowfall and freezing temperatures.
It will also be very cold throughout the day with maximum temperatures around 3 ° C, but it will feel like it is below 0 ° C from morning to night.
Clouds and wind will build overnight on Boxing Day before the arrival of Storm Bella, which is forecast to bring winds of up to 60 mph to our region on Saturday and Sunday, along with heavy rain.
