The Liverpool manager believes the Three Lions players could be exhausted when they show up for Euro 2020 next summer
Jurgen Klopp says England manager Gareth Southgate will suffer if the Premier League does not change its rules to allow five substitutes per game.
Liverpool’s head coach has expressed his belief that the league should shift from three to five substitutions allowed per game, citing match congestion in the 2020-21 season shortened by the coronavirus.
Liverpool have already suffered a number of key injuries this season, which has angered the German coach as he believes they have been caused in part by match congestion and the lack of additional substitutes available.
Klopp has now warned that if the rules are not changed, Southgate’s side will pay the price in next summer’s rescheduled Euro 2020 tournament.
“I’m sure we will discuss it again soon, due to the influence of three substitutes,” Klopp said. “Now almost all teams have to play every three days, it will be huge for everyone from now on and all teams will feel the difference. Next summer it will be a problem for Gareth Southgate.
“All the players that Gareth wants to choose to play [European] soccer most of them, practically all. Most of them play three times a week, starting in February, and they play three times a week all the time. Gareth will get what we give him if we have three substitutes. “
Klopp has been involved in an ongoing feud with Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder, who favors keeping three substitutes per game because he believes allowing more substitutes would benefit bigger clubs with deeper squads like Liverpool.
However, as games begin to rally during the busy holiday period, Klopp cautioned that even the smallest club coaches will regret not supporting a proposal to allow five substitutes per game.
“Soccer, now begins the most intense period for all teams. As of now, almost all teams play every three days, ”Klopp added.
“And some teams will now realize how difficult it is, and that is why we still have to talk about the five substitutes even though we did not vote yesterday. It will be huge for everyone from now on and each team will feel the difference. “
