The 28-year-old Doherty started for Stephen Kenny’s Ireland, winning just his 12th international game for Ireland in what was billed as a crucial match for his country. Ireland had to win to have any chance of qualifying for Euro 2020.

In what was a close match, both sides managed just one shot on goal for the first 90 minutes as Doherty lined up alongside Shane Duffy, John Egan and Enda Stevens on defense, facing Darren Randolph.

That match went to penalties after the two teams failed to break the deadlock during 30 minutes of overtime. Doherty was chosen to shoot a penalty for his country, but failed to hit the back of the net.

Doherty wasn’t the only player to miss for Ireland, as Preston’s Alan Browne also failed to convert from 12 yards, while Slovakia hit the back of the net on all four of their penalties. Ireland dropped out of qualification for Euro 2020.

Ireland fans talked about Doherty during and after the play-off clash and it was largely a mixed reaction to his performance. Some thought he played well, while others felt he left too many holes on defense when attacking.
