An “friendly fire” incident by the Iranian navy in which a ship sank has killed dozens of sailors, according to unofficial reports.
Local journalists said the Jamaran frigate was testing a new anti-ship missile that caught on and hit Konarak, a logistics ship.
The Iranian semi-official news agency Fars said one sailor died and several others were injured in a naval exercise.
He described Sunday’s incident near the Strait of Hormuz as an “accident.”

According to unofficial reports, Jamaran, operated by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), fired the missile prematurely before Konarak had time to navigate away from a floating target that had towed to a designated position.
Videos posted on social media show injured sailors being transferred to ambulances.
In January, the IRGC mistakenly shot down a Ukrainian passenger plane near Tehran, killing all 176 people on board, at a time of heightened tension with the United States.
