Cornwall has been battered by wind, rain and big waves today (Friday) when Storm Alex hit the southwest.
A severe weather advisory from the Met Office took effect this morning as the storm woke Devon and Cornwall to torrential rain and strong winds.
Gusts of up to 65 mph were expected in coastal areas including Ilfracombe, Plymouth and Newquay, with wind and rain warnings covering the entire region from 3 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday.

Storm Alex, a weather system named by Météo-France earlier this week, hit the southern tip of the UK early in the morning and continued throughout the day.
A second weather advisory, this time for rain only, is in effect for most of Devon from 3am Saturday to 6pm Sunday.
Before the storm hits Steve Ramsdale, Chief Meteorologist for the Met Office, said: “It will be a pretty miserable end to the work week for the south and south west of England as Storm Alex brings heavy rain and gale force winds around 60-65 mph for some.
“As the strong winds and rain associated with Storm Alex recede from Britain later on Friday, another low pressure system is moving towards the UK from the east bringing more very heavy rain and strong winds for many during weekend”.
Parts of Wales, south-west England and eastern Scotland could see more than 100mm of rain over the weekend, likely leading to significant flood impacts, increased risk of landslides, and very difficult driving conditions.
