‘I still don’t understand’ – Jurgen Klopp was taken aback by Liverpool forward Sadio Mane

Jurgen Klopp praised the Liverpool youth after a memorable game at Anfield, but admits that Sadio Mane’s talent left him baffled at times.

The Reds marked the return of 2,000 fans with a resounding 4-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday night.

Goals from Mohamed Salah, Gini Wijnaldum, Joel Matip and an own goal by Nelson Semedo again put the Premier League champion behind leaders Tottenham Hotspur on goal difference.

Liverpool started anew with the young trio Caoimhin Kelleher, Neco Williams and Curtis Jones, with Klopp in particular impressed with Williams’ display after the right-back received an early yellow card.

“There were a lot of great individual performances,” Klopp said. “The youngsters were really great.

“Neco Williams, we only took him out because the Wolves plan was obviously to bring (Adama) Traore down the left wing so if Neco fouls one more, maybe he’ll get a second yellow. He played very, very well.

“Sadio had a few moments when he controlled the ball where I still don’t understand how he can do that kind of thing.

“There were a lot of good performances and this is how you can win a football game.”

Klopp was also encouraged by the way his players adapted to a formation change from the Wolves as they extended their unbeaten streak of home runs in the league to 65 games.

“We prepared for the Wolves, which is difficult anyway, but we didn’t know what system they would play,” said the Reds boss.

“And when we looked at their lineup, we still didn’t know what system they would play because (Leander) Dendoncker normally plays on the back row, he played midfield today.

“We are not too obsessed with the details, but we are in the details. I was thinking what to say to the players: are we preparing for five in the back or is it now four in the back?

“Not a lot of things changed for us, but some did change and the guys adapted exceptionally well.

“We used our training very well and we played in the spaces we had to play. That’s what I enjoyed the most. “
