Dozens of motorists were stuck on one of North Staffordshire’s busiest roads when snow fell overnight.

This was the scene at Basford Bank heading towards the MFI roundabout this morning, with some motorists trapped for three hours.

Lisa Davies, from Norton Heights, left her home at 6 a.m. to get to Wigan, but was stuck in traffic for three hours.

She said: “Nothing can happen. The road is clear from the A500 to Festival Park, but not this way.”

In other parts of the region, there have been problems on the A500 near Talke, Kidsgrove Bank, the A50, M6 and A34 near Yarlet heading to Stafford.

Earlier today, the Stoke-on-Trent City Council issued a statement regarding the city’s gritters.

A council spokesperson said: “We put in 20 grams of sand at 4 am yesterday, double the amount we would normally do and did the same between 7 pm and 11 pm yesterday. This was in response to the forecast that 0.1mm would drop at 5am.

“We had a team monitoring the forecast for the last 24 hours and obviously that forecast changed, so today at 4 AM we had the crews out of service and all the main routes had been cleared by 8:30 AM. the morning”.

“We now have snowplows on the main roads, but our advice is don’t travel if you don’t have to, stay home if you can.”
