Readers of the Manchester evening news They have been reacting to the announcement that Greater Manchester Police will be placed on ‘special measures’ following a damning inspection report.

In an exclusive report released last night, the MENS revealed how Her Majesty’s Surveillance Inspectorate has elevated GMP to what is officially known as the “national oversight process.”

The measure comes as a result of the failures of force in registering crimes and protecting vulnerable people.

It follows an overwhelming report published last week that found that GMP had significantly deteriorated in its crime record since 2018 and was now even worse than in 2016, when it was rated as inappropriate.

The report also highlighted drifting and poorly planned investigations and failures in protection.

The new measures are expected to remain in force until the GMP can demonstrate sufficient improvement.

Dozens of MENS Readers have reacted to the ad by leaving comments on our website and Facebook page.

Many support the move, describing the force as “useless” and “inept.” While others blame the government for the cuts in public services.

Below are some of their comments.

Peter Smith said: “I don’t know the ins and outs of the story, but I feel sorry for all the decent officers and staff trying to make our city safer.

“Citizens and decent staff are being let down by cuts and government support and whatever else is happening.”

Elizabeth Wright commented: “I had to call 101 today. I was put through to a call manager who was still waiting for them to answer after an hour and a half.”

Terry Johnson said, “You can’t fight crime when you don’t have money.

“Court after court over many years, fewer officers and front-line detectives will mean that some crimes are not investigated and those that are may not get the necessary resources.

“When all these cuts have been made over the years, it should never have included the police, the NHS or the fire services, they should have been fenced off.”

Julie Leaff commented: “I agree that it’s been a long time, there is no faith in our police to protect anyone or people’s property, only interested in anything that makes them money.

“End ends ends.”

In a comment left on our website, a user named ‘Clue’ wrote: “I know this will not be a popular comment, but please can you try to remember that not everyone who works for GMP is incompetent.

“There are MANY of us who absolutely try hard and want to serve the public well.

“Yes, clearly GMP has some massive problems, but remember that there are really decent people in GMP.

“It’s hard to believe given all the recent press, but we do.”

Dave Savage said: “About time. Totally useless, never show up, don’t bother taking fingerprints when they can, hide behind ‘lack of resources’ and paperwork.

“Criminals are enjoying freedom and people and property are unprotected.”

An online user called ‘Red Mist’ wrote: “Theft recently. It is devastating as any other theft victim will agree.

“The police told us on the phone that they will not investigate if we don’t have anything on camera.

“Gone are the days when someone would go out looking for fingerprints. Forget it. You’re on your own. I just gave a crime number now.

“However, they can send handed police officers into the crowd if someone is reported to have more than six people in a house.

“If we hit a load of sharp nails against our fence and any of the little ones get injured, we will be charged.

“The police no longer serve their purpose and it is about time they carried the can for their ineptitude.”

Peter Piper blamed Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, who was elected in 2017 and oversees the force politically.

Burnham has yet to comment on the announcement.

“How has Andy Burnham allowed this to happen? After all, the ultimate responsibility lies with him,” said Peter Piper.

Finally, an online user named ‘Truthman’ wrote: “This is not the fault of GMP. It is the fault of our government.

“They cut the BPM numbers by thousands and were warned that this would have an impact on services, but they did it anyway.

“Then combined with the new failed IOPS, this is the result.

“You can get rid of a large number of officers and then wonder why the police don’t show up for crimes.

“It is purely mathematical to expect the same service that we had.”
