I don’t “lie” or “sandbag” – Hamilton

Lewis Hamilton is convinced he doesn’t “lie” or “sandbag” during practice after snatching another pole position from his Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas.

Bottas has become known as ‘Mr Friday’ this season due to his performances in practice, having finished at the top of FP1 for seven consecutive races.

Heading into qualification for the Portuguese Grand Prix, Bottas was the rider to beat after a clean sweep practice for the second time this year, as was the case at another new circuit at Mugello.

But just like at Mugello, Bottas was beaten to pole by Hamilton, who secured the 97th of his career to take him to the 92nd victory that will see him claim the all-time record for racing victories if he takes the flag. checkered.

When asked if anything is saved in practice before dropping Bottas in qualifying, Hamilton said: “I am not lying, I have nothing to hide, I am not saving anything.

“Personally, I never felt like that worked. I remember when I was younger and in the lower ranks, some people tried to do those things.

“But I remember trying when I was in Formula 3, or something like that, and it never ended well, so that has never been part of my philosophy.”

Explaining his approach over the course of a weekend, Hamilton added: “It’s like building a wall – you put one brick, the next, the next and you just keep getting better every moment.”

‘There’s a lot of work going on in the background, trying to adjust, get the perfect setting for braking bias and differential and how it attacks every corner. It’s not easy so I’ve been pushing it all weekend.

“Overall, I think I have been driving very well all weekend. I have been very happy with my performances during practice. [Bottas] has always been at the top.

“So I really had to keep digging and believe that I could eventually get there. Crossing the line and getting pole, it was a great feeling, naturally, because I really had to work a lot.”
