Merseyside police officers remain at the site of a major search operation today.

The investigation has been ongoing for at least seven days, but police are keeping quiet about the nature of the search.

ECHO has been told that the search is part of an ongoing investigation that will last at least until the end of the week, but perhaps longer.

A spokesperson told ECHO: “Merseyside Police can confirm that specialist officers are conducting a search in the forest near Intake Lane in Bickerstaffe, Lancashire, as part of an ongoing investigation.”

Officers dressed in white suits and face masks have been seen using shovels to excavate areas of forest.

Working under blue and white tents, the police place the excavated terrain in large black containers.

ECHO understands that officers have been combing a major area on the Merseyside / Lancashire border for at least seven days.

They are currently working on Intake Lane, Bickerstaffe.

The sound of machinery being used to clear brush could be heard in the vicinity of the search.

The previous areas where the search was completed have been marked in the woods, about five minutes from the West Lancashire village.

Onlookers said police first arrived at the scene on Thursday and that the number and activity have increased in recent days.

Police officers have also questioned locals who come across the operation about their personal data and checks have been carried out on vehicle registration plates.

One person said: “It seems to be a very meaningful search with a lot of officers underground looking for something.

“There are many excavations in progress.

“I asked if a body had been found, but got no answers.

“The area is close to the highway and people who live in the area are talking about what is happening.”
