Adam Idah came off the bench to fire Norwich City to a championship win on opening day at Huddersfield after harsh words from Daniel Farke for his performances in practice during the week.
Idah made his senior international debut for the Republic of Ireland over the past fortnight, but Farke revealed he was less than impressed with the young forward’s lack of focus before the big kickoff.
But Idah was preferred to West Ham by signing Jordan Hugill for the final stages and responded within five minutes of his late arrival to sweep home the quiet cut from Teemu Pukki.
I’ll tell you a little secret. I was not at all happy with Adam’s performances in practice this week, ”Farke said. “There were some harsh words and even an outburst on my part. But I showed faith in him to keep going and he showed what it’s all about. Michael McGovern came up to me at the end and told me that he had also talked to Adam. That’s what I want to see from the experienced players on my squad.
“Jordan would have been disappointed not to play any minute, but in the end the first thing he did was go over and give Adam a hug and also celebrate with Teemu. Same for Ben Gibson or Alex Tettey.
“I am very happy for all the boys. It wasn’t about Adam, although it will get some headlines. This was a victory for the whole group. He knew how difficult it would be. Huddersfield pushed us really well and we had to work hard but we kept our composure and getting that first win will go a long way for the group.
“It is a victory for both the fans and the players and we would like them to be with us in the stadium.”
