Carlos Corberán claimed his first victory as Huddersfield manager by beating Nottingham Forest to render the visitors senseless and scoreless after three championship matches.
Fraizer Campbell flew home spectacularly in 54 minutes after Harry Toffolo picked him with a cut from the baseline. Before that, Huddersfield had Ben Hamer to thank after he made two brilliant saves in the first half to keep Sammy Ameobi and Loïc Mbe Soh out. Forest was unable to disrupt Hamer’s goal after the break in another lackluster performance.
It is the first time in 66 years that Forest has lost his first three league games, increasing the pressure on Sabri Lamouchi. Forest’s manager made seven changes, including debuts by defender Scott McKenna and Harry Arter, and changed formation as he looked to end a winless streak in eight.
“It’s a very bad start, a bad result tonight,” Lamouchi said. “We need to find something positive, with a lot of changes and the first time together. We try to play, create and unfortunately we don’t score ”.
Huddersfield captain Jonathan Hogg was very lucky to avoid a red card after a tack challenge on Arter in the first minute, then Josh Koroma couldn’t get any real power behind a long-range effort as Town looked to get into the front foot. Cyrus Christie de Forest had a comfortably saved shot after cutting inside from the right.
Alex Pritchard failed to convert Koroma’s cross into the back post with the goal calling for minutes later, before Hamer brilliantly deflected Ameobi’s shot for a corner kick as the action moved from one end to the other.
Brice Samba spilled Koroma’s low shot before saving Campbell’s pursuit at point blank range. Juninho Bacuna came close before Koroma had a blocked shot to a corner after Jack Colback carelessly gave up the ball.
Campbell headed off an Isaac Mbenza cross before Luke Freeman fired straight at Hamer after a good run inside. Hamer was right to deflect Mbe Soh’s header after hitting his marker in a corner.
Koroma fired from a tight angle before Toffolo cut a half volley off target as Huddersfield created opportunities early in the second half. The pressure paid off when Campbell showed great technique to volley home from 12 yards after Toffolo selected him.
Forest missed a chance to equalize when Lewis Grabban narrowly shot in the 67th minute after the ball fell gently on the edge of the area. Adama Diakhaby then saw a well-blocked door shot by Colback at his own six-yard line with 10 minutes to go.
Huddersfield should have sealed it when Samba held Diakhaby out one on one and Koroma couldn’t take advantage of the rebound.
