The Red Devils closed a deal for Uruguayan legend Cavani on the day of the transfer deadline, and the 33-year-old forward signed a one-year contract with the Premier League club.
Cavani has scored 341 goals in 556 club appearances, including a record 200 in 301 appearances for PSG, which he left in June.
In reaction to Cavani’s move to Manchester United, Red Devils legend Ferdinand told the FIVE YouTube channel: ‘It’s crazy because I reached out to Cavani on social media in January.
‘I used to do it as a player. I would get in touch with the players and ask them, “Would you come to Manchester United?” Because I’m a fan! I send messages to players all the time.
Listen, Cavani was flattered that someone connected to the club said that. I thought i’d take the chance [to join] And that is what has happened ‘.
Ferdinand believes Cavani will prove to be an excellent signing for Manchester United and will benefit current forwards Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood.
He added: ‘I highlighted Cavani as a player to buy during the last transfer window because we have three extremely talented young forwards who need help.
They are going to need help. Martial is an excellent example because now he will be suspended (after his red card against Tottenham) and we need someone to intervene.
‘The way Cavani plays, the way he applies himself, the way he trains, his experience, what he could teach people like Mason Greenwood.
‘He has scored so many goals and won multiple trophies. For Greenwood to see you daily, you will benefit the most.
Is it long term? No, it is not. But I played for a team where we bought Henrik Larsson. Do you ask forwards like Wayne Rooney if he added value to the team? The answer is yes.
“If Cavani can have that effect with this group of players, then it’s worth it.
Listen, he’s a top-tier player. Experienced, he scores goals, he is someone who will be worthwhile for the club ”.
On the day of the transfer deadline, Manchester United also signed Brazilian defender Alex Telles and Atalanta winger Amad Diallo.
