Hopes for skiing holidays fade as European resorts close their slopes

secondRitons who are on vacation when England’s lockdown begins on Thursday will not have to rush home, the government has confirmed, prompting a surge in last-minute holiday bookings. But aspiring skiers will not be able to join the mass exodus, as many European resorts have closed their slopes amid new closure measures.

Starting tomorrow, Austria will be the last to close its ski resorts, joining those of Italy and France, which have already been closed.

“There will be no Christmas skiing,” said Richard Green, founder of Ski France, which has been operating ski vacations in the Alps since 1988.

Ski companies “must close their hatches, I hope the license [is] spread out and fingers crossed, “Green told Telegraph Travel.

Many tour operators are now pinning their hopes on an increase in bookings when travel regulations are lifted, whenever that is. “The new closures across Europe have killed any optimism about starting the season as planned,” said Iain Martin, host of The Ski Podcast. “We could see significant last minute bookings and at present, that’s the best we can hope for.”
